More about Frankie’s Pretty Monsters

Hi there, my name is Sarah, and I’ve been fascinated with undiscovered animals and historical folktales since I was a child. I began teaching myself how to sew when I realized I could bring my favorite stories and creatures to life with my own creative interpretation. When I was a Sophomore in high school, I started expanding my hobby into something that I hoped could become a small business, and that summer with the “help” of the COVID-19 pandemic, I took the plunge and began selling my work through Instagram.

A young woman in a black dress holds a black, gray, and red patchwork Mothman rag doll in front of a bookshelf.
Four small sewn moth-shaped creatures with black fabric bodies, red button eyes, black antennae, and moth-shaped wings with a different colorful fabric sit outside on a log.

Additionally, my dedication to keeping my art and my business as environmentally friendly as possible has proved not to be a challenge, but instead another source of inspiration. Much of my recent work has explored the links between individual cryptids and the known animals that could be behind the sightings. In a continuation of my efforts to reduce textile waste, I’ve also launched the start of a series of soft sculptures that emulate rag-doll styles of construction in the likeness of various folkloric creatures. Each scrap of patchwork represents the way that individuals contribute to the growth and establishment of a legend - stitching details together until we’ve created something comprehensible out of the unknown. After all, folklore is a thing stitched together, and we are the thread.
